In 1972, ASC was asked to assume responsibility for the pre-broadcast review of commercials directed to children. Since that time, as the federal government rationalized services that could be best accomplished by the private sector, ASC Clearance Services has provided, on a fee-for-service basis, a mechanism by which advertisers can proactively ensure that their advertising messages adhere to applicable legislation, regulations, and/or sectoral codes and guidelines.

A full-time staff of professional analysts provide clearance services. The analysts have professional credentials, specialized training and experience in their respective disciplines, complemented with knowledge in the field of advertising and communications. Approved advertising is assigned an ASC clearance number. This number demonstrates to media that the advertisement complies with applicable standards.
