WHY YOU CAN BELIEVE WHAT YOU’RE ABOUT TO READ-- ADVERTISING STANDARDS CANADA’S PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT CAMPAIGN

Toronto, ON, March 6, 2006 -- Advertising Standards Canada (ASC), the Canadian advertising industry self-regulatory body, launched its latest Public Service Announcement (PSA) campaign consisting of print, out-of-home and electronic advertisements. The striking PSA highlights the role of the Canadian Code of Advertising Standards (Code) in setting standards for advertising that is truthful, fair, and accurate. Through the generous support of ASC’s media partners, the PSAs will appear across Canada.

The creative for the print and out-of-home PSA features six people, each carrying a sign with one word — TRUTH. The headline reads: Why you can believe what you’re about to read. “It’s a compelling message,” said Janet Feasby, ASC’s Vice President, Standards, “and we hope it motivates consumers to learn more about the Code.”

The PSA invites consumers to learn more about the code by visiting ASC’s website, www.adstandards.com or by calling ASC’s toll-free recorded consumer information line at 1-877-656-8646. Consumers can also learn how to submit complaints to ASC if they have concerns about an advertisement that appears in Canadian media.

“The code was first published over forty years ago and is regularly updated to ensure that it remains relevant and current in today’s environment,” said Linda Nagel, ASC’s President and CEO. “For example, the issue of bullying is a growing societal concern. Given this, the code was recently updated to include a provision stating that advertisements must not appear to condone or encourage bullying.”

ASC is committed to ensuring the integrity and viability of advertising through industry self-regulation. ASC administers the Canadian Code of Advertising Standards and accepts complaints from consumers about advertising. ASC’s members include leading Canadian advertisers, advertising agencies, media organizations, and suppliers to the advertising sector. For more information, visit www.adstandards.com.
