Sandy Macleod

Meet the New Chair

Congratulations to Sandy MacLeod ASC’s 2015/2016 Chair of the Board.

In his current position as Chief Operating Officer, Print, at Toronto Star Newspapers Ltd., Sandy touches many aspects of Star Media Group businesses, with a special focus on revenue development and operations at the Toronto Star and Metro English Canada. Prior to this role, he held senior positions in strategy, marketing, logistics, human resources, circulation and production.

Sandy holds an MBA from Queen's University and a Certificate in Management from the Canadian Institute of Management. In addition to serving on ASC’s Board, he serves on the boards of the International Newsmedia Marketing Association (INMA) and the Newspaper Audience Development Databank Inc. (NADbank).

Elected to the ASC Executive Committee as Vice Chair in 2011, Sandy has served on ASC’s Board of Directors since 2007. He also serves on the Board’s PSA Committee, which was instrumental to the success of 2015 ASC’s "Truth in Advertising Matters" PSA campaigns. Sandy, a firm believer in advertising self-regulation, says "ASC serves a critical role in our industry. It allows a forum for issues to come forward without the bureaucracy of government, and its strength is in numbers and member co-operation".

2015 Annual General Meeting and Breakfast Program

ASC’s 2015 Annual General Meeting and Breakfast Program took place on Thursday, May 7th and featured an awards presentation and keynote address, "You Do Not Control Your Brand. (A Brief History of the Future)" by Bruce Turkel, CEO of the successful brand management firm, TURKEL.

ASC took the opportunity to recognize the media sponsors that generously supported its 2015 "Creativity is Subjective. The Truth isn’t." PSA campaign. Since its launch in early 2015, ASC has received approximately $10 million in committed media support to extend the reach of the campaign in print, broadcast, out-of-home and digital media across Canada, in both official languages.

ASC Releases 2014 Complaints Report

In March, Advertising Standards Canada released its Annual Ad Complaints Report – 2014 Year in Review. The Report provides information about consumers’ complaints submitted to ASC in 2014 for review under the Canadian Code of Advertising Standards (Code). The following are some Report highlights:

  • 1,274 complaints were submitted about 864 advertisements
  • 54% of pursued complaints alleged inaccurate or misleading advertising
  • 130 complaints were received about retail advertising - the highest by sector
  • 80 complaints about 36 advertisements were upheld by independent Standards Councils

"Through their complaints, Canadians tell us they are concerned about ads they believe are misleading or inaccurate, such as offers that were not honoured by retailers, and claims that could not be substantiated," stated Janet Feasby, Vice President, Standards, at ASC. "In addition, ads that viewers perceived as sexist and demeaning to women were of particular concern in Quebec," noted Danielle Lefrançois, ASC’s Communications Manager in Quebec.
